Every now and again I like to treat myself when travelling (but not often!), and on a recent trip to Oman I became aware of two of the most luxurious boutique resorts anywhere in the world.
Alila Jabal Akhdar Resort is situated 2000 metres above sea level in the Al Hajar mountains, about an hour’s drive north of Nizwa. It is a fairly new resort, but despite that it already has a lot of character. Despite another luxury resort also being close by, the Alila Resort feels completely in the wilderness, and this is what makes it so good and so worth the high price to stay there. A desert clifftop may not seem like the place to build a luxury hotel, but once inside the furnished rooms and bathing around the naturally-warmed infinity pool, you’ll forget all about the trappings of city life in Muscat!

Six Senses Hideaway Zighy Bay is actually situated on the between the ocean and mountains of the Musandam Peninsula in Oman, and is only a short drive away from Dubai. Unlike the Alila Jabal Akhdar Resort, however, Six Senses Hideaway at Zighy Bay is built at ground level with direct access to the warm waters of the Gulf of Oman. Its cobbled and rustic décor really fits in with its mountainous surroundings and a lot of the villas here actually have their own personal plunge pools! It truly is a place for the rich and famous to ‘hideaway’!

In actual fact, Oman doesn’t have much of a backpacking scene, and even budget accommodation here is quite high. For that reason I don’t feel too guilty looking at these amazing hotels. I don’t think I have seen any better anywhere else. The only place that can come close is some of the luxurious resorts in the Maldives, especially Gili Lankanfushi.
Would you ever waste your money in these kind of hotels, or are the prices just too obscene?
