With Sigiriya being a good couple of hours away from Kandy in the central highlands, and even further away from Colombo on the west coast, it is a good idea to stay overnight near the rock fortress to make the most of your experience. While accommodation is generally not that cheap near to Sigiriya, some bargains can be found if you know where to look.
Aliya Resort Sigiriya is my personal favourite close to the rock fortress itself. This boutique hotel was only built a couple of years ago, but has proven very popular with international visitors to the area. Rooms from £100 per night.
Jetwing Vil Ayuna is from the prestigious Jetwing Hotel group, and they perhaps have the most luxurious accommodation nearby to Sigiriya, including beautiful water cottages that are situated beside a lake. http://www.jetwinghotels.com/jetwingviluyana/ Rooms from £170 per night.
Kassapa Lions Rock is a more mid-value hotel that is still relatively close to Sigiriya attractions. There are some great staff members here that make your stay a welcome one, and it is perfect for a night or two. http://www.kassapalionsrock.com/ Rooms from £85 per night.
Sigiriya Village Hotel simply has it all, and there are some amazing views of the Rock itself from the around the swimming pool. This hotel is very popular and books out months in advance during high season. Rooms from £92 per night.
Kumbukgas Mankada Lodge is an example of cheaper accommodation in the Sigiriya area, including homestays. Slightly further away from the action, this lodge is nonetheless great value in a safe part of town. Rooms from £41 per night.
