Top 5 ridiculously overrated tourist attractions

We all love scouring the globe to see the next big tourist attraction and we all want to enjoy the experience when we get there (for the right price!). However, despite our best intentions, there are some major tourist attractions in the world that are simply overrated and although they may have been interesting a long time ago, now they cannot be recommended to a future generation.

5. The Great Wall of China, northern China.

What’s wrong with it? It stretches on forever, and it is way too touristy. It is nowhere near as amazing as some people like to think. In fact, many think the Wall is much smaller and therefore have a chance to walk across all of it, but remember this thing can be seen from the Moon, so it can’t be that small! Tourism is a huge problem now at the Wall, as more and more people descend in the area, which makes for a very unpleasant experience, especially for the claustrophobic!

The Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx

4. The Pyramids of Giza, Egypt.

What’s wrong with it? Much like the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx are literally drowned in tourists throughout the year, but two other problems get my goat about this place: firstly, there is a distinct lack of shade in the area which makes the heat unbearable, and you also get lots of touts and hagglers outside the premises who will not take “no” for an answer!

niagara

3. Niagara Falls, USA and Canada.

What’s wrong with it? It’s just not that impressive compared to some of the other amazing waterfalls in the world, such as Angel Falls in Venezuela, Iguassu Falls in Brazil, and Victoria Falls in Zambia. American and Canadian tourists flock here in their millions but I wonder if they realise that there are more impressive falls out there?

uluru3

2. Uluru, Australia.

What’s wrong with it? It’s just overrated! Maybe if people didn’t keep banging on about it so much then it wouldn’t be included on this list, but seeing as people always seem to rank Uluru up there with the likes of Kangaroo Island, the Daintree Rainforest, and the Great Barrier Reef, I expected more much than just a religious red rock.

The London Eye
The London Eye

1. The London Eye, UK.

What’s wrong with it? What’s right with it, more like. For tourists, the London Eye – now sponsored by Coca Cola – is like a centre point of London and everybody flocks here to take their selfies and enjoy a fairly short ride on the South Bank. But apart from being an eyesore, the London Eye is way too expensive and doesn’t last long enough – plus the queuing conditions are absolutely havoc!

Do you agree with my choices? What is your most overrated tourist attraction in the world?

  1. Totally agree with you that some of these attractions are overrated. Just sharing on my own experience of London Eye which was in 2012. I would say i enjoyed the ride although it was quite brief. Its pretty cool to be able to see so much of the city’s landscape. I am looking forward to see other places despite being overrated, eg Great wall of China.. 🙂

      1. Hmmm thats a tough one. Well I would say the following are overrated; London Eye, changing the guard at Buckingham Palace London (if this is considered as an attraction), Manneken Pis Brussels, Flower clock in Geneva.

  2. Pyramids of Giza are always presented as being somewhere in the middle of the desert. Prior to my visit, I knew that’s not true, but I was still shocked, when I realised they are just a step away from the urban area. Dirty, nasty urban area. I didn’t mind the heat and lack of shade, but I couldn’t bear the annoying locals trying to sell us whatever they were selling.

    1. That’s another great reason why the Pyramids are overrated, Urska! They are too close to civilisation. In fact, somebody I know claimed there was a fast food restaurant in the nearby area which had views of the Sphinx. Yuk!
