The United States of America has some of the most amazing food anywhere on the planet, but over the decades this food has tended to get bigger and bigger to cater for the demands of the people who live here. “Upsizing” your meal and buying “supersized” products is now part of American culture, and there are always stories of obesity on the news as the fats, sugars, and calorie content of this food continue to pile on the pounds (and kilograms!) of anybody who eats it!

In my experience, there are at least 5 types of traditional American foods that are dangerously unhealthy unless you eat them in moderation, and I have listed them below. I haven’t included any Mexican, Korean, Japanese meals in my list (that are still common in the US) because they are not traditional American foods. So let’s take a look at 5 of the worst foods!
Milkshakes are a staple item of Americans’ diets and it’s no surprise that big business can be made from selling them. It is bad enough to have a milkshake of any flavour, such as banana or strawberry, but when you add chocolate to the mix, then you can just pile on the calories like there’s no tomorrow!
Buffalo Wings scream “AMERICA” like perhaps nothing else, and it is not uncommon for American households to eat some kind of buffalo wing dish at least once or twice a week. Usually, the wings are coated in fattening marinades and sauces which add to the calorific experience!
Pancakes may look innocent enough, but in the US it is common to add sticky and fatty foods with the pancake, such as syrup, jam, and ice cream. Soon the pancake becomes coated in these extra ingredients and you would not believe how much fat and sugar is consumed from such a simple dish.
Cheeseburgers are eaten all over the world, but if one country likes to do it bigger than anyone else then it’s the US! Some fast food brands in the US offer double, triple, or even quadruple burgers with all the fillings you can imagine, including bacon, onion rings, and of course the fries and potato wedges! You may gain some pounds after eating an American cheeseburger!
Deep Dish Pizza are unlike the traditional pizzas from Italy. These Chicago-style pizzas have a unbelievably thick crust, which is full of carbs and adds to the bloated feeling you will have after scoffing this down. Of course, the sticky hot cheese toppings (or bacon, or peperoni, or whatever…) are also full of calories and this is why the deep dish pizza is known as the most fattening fast food in the Americas!
Honourable mentions must go to Fried Coke and doughnuts! Please try to enjoy some classic American fast food in sparing quantity and as part of a healthy lifestyle!
